In the spring of 2000, the International
Skating Union (ISU) approved the selection of the Washington Figure Skating Education
and Development Fund to host the 2003 World Figure Skating Championships in Washington,
DC. Washington’s enthusiastic skating community, supportive corporate and
local interests, and its state-of-the art facilities were key factors in the award.
The 2003 World Figure Skating Championships will mark the 11th time a U.S. city
has been selected as the host since 1930.
Elite skaters from 50 countries will compete in the disciplines
of men’s and women’s singles, pairs and ice dancing at Washington’s
MCI Center, March 24-30, 2003. Past World Champions include Dick Button, Peggy
Fleming, Scott Hamilton, Dorothy Hamill, Brian Boitano, and 2000 World Champion,
Michelle Kwan.
The 2003 World Figure Skating Championships are sanctioned by
the International Skating Union (ISU) and by the United States Figure Skating
Association (USFSA). The USFSA is the national governing body for the sport of
figure skating in the United States. The USFSA is a member of the International
Skating Union, and is a member of the United States Olympic Committee (USOC).
